HHSC Showcases Resources for National Breastfeeding Month

Texas Health and Human Services Commission Promotes Breastfeeding Support During National Breastfeeding Month

AUSTIN – The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) highlights resources for mothers this August during National Breastfeeding Month. The initiative aligns with this year’s theme, “Breastfeeding Support Anytime, Anywhere,” and emphasizes making trusted guidance readily available to families.

For many Texas families, breastfeeding can come with challenges. Understanding this, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) serves over 760,000 women, infants, and children monthly throughout the state. This program aims to empower mothers with the support they need on their unique breastfeeding journeys.

“Every family’s breastfeeding experience is different, and mothers deserve support that meets them where they are,” said HHS Executive Commissioner Stephanie Muth. Through WIC, families receive encouragement and guidance as they strive to provide a healthy start for their children.

The Texas WIC program offers a wide array of resources including breastfeeding information available on BreastmilkCounts.com. Additionally, families can access free breastfeeding support through the 24/7 Texas Lactation Support Hotline at 855-550-6667, a partnership with the Texas Department of State Health Services Maternal and Child Health.

WIC clients can also benefit from personalized breastfeeding and nutrition counseling, connecting them with mom-to-mom support via peer counselors, certified lactation consultants, and specially trained clinic staff. Local WIC clinics provide access to valuable resources including support groups and nutritious food options such as fruits, vegetables, milk, eggs, and cheese.

Women can apply for Texas WIC as soon as they learn they are pregnant. The program is not only available to mothers but extends to caregivers of children under the age of 5, including fathers, foster parents, guardians, and grandparents.

For more information regarding benefits, eligibility, and how to apply, you can visit TexasWIC.org or contact the WIC office at 800-942-3678. Engaging with these resources can significantly enrich your breastfeeding experience and provide essential assistance in your parenting journey.
