Michigan UIA Warns Residents of Scam Calls
The Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) has alerted residents about a series of scam phone calls impersonating the agency. In a recent report, a Michigander received a call from a 313 area code claiming to be a manager from the UIA, stating that the agency owed them approximately $4,000 but required a $105 fee to access these funds.
Jason Palmer, the director of the Michigan UIA, emphasizes that the agency does not charge any fees associated with applying for or receiving unemployment benefits. “There is no end to the ways criminals prey on people to try to steal their money,” he stated. Palmer warns residents to be cautious if contacted unexpectedly by someone claiming to represent the UIA.
For Michigan benefit recipients, this warning is critical. Fraudulent calls not only threaten financial security but can also lead to misunderstandings about legitimate unemployment insurance processes. It’s essential to recognize how the UIA communicates with individuals: benefits are securely distributed either onto a debit card issued by U.S. Bank or through direct deposit to personal bank accounts. Residents should never be asked to pay a fee to access any funds.
What to Do If You Receive a Suspicious Call
- Do not provide personal or financial information.
- Confirm the legitimacy of the call by contacting the UIA directly at 1.866.500.0017.
- Be aware that the UIA usually communicates via mail or the Michigan Web Account Manager, not through unsolicited phone calls.
Residents are encouraged to stay vigilant to protect against these scams and ensure they are receiving the benefits they are entitled to without intervention from fraudsters. If you experience any suspicious activity, reporting it to the UIA can help safeguard the community.
