New Restaurant Meal Program Launches for Michigan Food Assistance Recipients
A new initiative from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) will allow certain food assistance recipients to use their benefits at local restaurants. This program, called the Restaurant Meal Program (RMP), aims to support adults over the age of 60, individuals with disabilities receiving Social Security or disability benefits, and those experiencing homelessness.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating, “No Michigander should worry about how to put food on the table for themselves and their families, especially during a pandemic.” This initiative will ensure that vulnerable populations have access to meals during the challenging winter months.
Who Is Eligible?
In Michigan, the RMP will be available to over 180,000 seniors, 134,000 residents with disabilities, and around 1,200 residents experiencing homelessness. The program is targeted at those who have difficulties in meal preparation due to their circumstances.
How the Program Works
The program enables participants to use their Bridge Cards to purchase prepared meals from enrolled restaurants. For restaurants to join, they must offer low-cost or discounted meals, ensuring that they meet the criteria set by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for food assistance programs.
- Low-cost meals must be priced lower than what is normally charged to non-FAP customers.
- Discounted meals should be publicly advertised and offered as specials.
For Restaurants
Restaurants interested in participating can find further information and enrollment requirements at michigan.gov. Once they are approved, MDHHS will provide updates about when eligible recipients can begin using their Bridge Cards at participating locations.
Support for Local Businesses
Alongside the RMP, the state is also implementing a spirits or liquor buy-back program to provide additional financial relief to Michigan bars and restaurants affected by the pandemic. This effort aims to help stabilize the local food service industry while supporting Michiganders in accessing affordable meals.
For those eligible, the RMP offers a critical resource in ensuring food security and enhancing access to nutritious meals during these challenging times.
