Michigan DHHS Announces Full Resumption of SNAP Benefits
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has confirmed that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will fully resume for recipients across the state. Those who typically receive their benefits on the ninth of the month can expect their full SNAP allotments within the next 48 hours. Recipients on other schedules will also receive their payments as per usual.
Elizabeth Hertel, the MDHHS director, expressed relief on behalf of the nearly one million Michiganders relying on this support. The recent uncertainty regarding the USDA’s request to block SNAP payments had added unnecessary stress to families already facing challenges. “We will continue to do everything we can to help those affected,” Hertel stated.
Impact on Michigan Residents
This reinstatement of benefits is crucial for many families who depend on SNAP to afford nutritious food. In Michigan, the average household receiving SNAP benefits currently gets about $335.03 each month, amounting to approximately $5.68 per person per day. With about 492,225 children and 38,513 veterans benefitting from the program, the return to full benefits is a significant relief amidst ongoing economic challenges.
What Recipients Should Do
SNAP recipients are encouraged to reach out to their local MDHHS office with any inquiries regarding their benefits. Additionally, updates can be accessed via MI Bridges, which serves as a helpful resource for checking eligibility and managing benefits.
To further support families during challenging times, Governor Whitmer has allocated $4.5 million to the Food Bank Council of Michigan. This funding will distribute food assistance throughout all 83 counties, ensuring residents unable to reach food banks receive necessary aid.
