Changes to SNAP Benefits in Texas: What You Need to Know
Under Senate Bill 379, significant changes are coming to the use of SNAP benefits (formerly known as food stamps) in Texas. Effective immediately, recipients will find that sweetened beverages containing artificial sweeteners or 5 grams or more of added sugar are no longer eligible for purchase with Lone Star Cards.
This law, implemented by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC), aims to promote healthier choices among SNAP recipients by limiting the purchase of certain sugary drinks. However, there are exceptions to these restrictions. Texans can still use their SNAP benefits to purchase:
- Beverages made with milk, milk products, or milk substitutes
- Drinks containing more than 50% vegetable or fruit juice by volume
- Natural plant-based sweeteners (such as stevia or monk fruit) with less than 5 grams of added sugar
- Medical-grade electrolyte drinks for dehydration
Additionally, the new law prohibits the purchase of various types of candy with SNAP benefits, including:
- Gum
- Candy bars
- Nuts, raisins, and fruits that are candied, crystallized, glazed, or coated with chocolate, yogurt, or caramel
- Other confections made with natural or artificial sweeteners
Interestingly, sweetened snack items like granola bars, trail mix, ice cream, ice pops, and sorbet remain eligible for purchase under the new regulations. The law does not restrict the purchase of products used exclusively for cooking, such as chocolate bits and sprinkles.
These restrictions will affect all Texas retailers that accept SNAP benefits, as well as online retailers fulfilling orders for Texas residents. It’s essential for Texans to be aware of these changes, as it is the responsibility of local businesses to update their store systems and train staff on identifying ineligible products.
For SNAP recipients, this means a more careful selection process when shopping. It’s advisable to check product labels prior to making purchases to ensure compliance with the new rules.
